Olson asks for forgiveness after assault charges

Mark Brunswick, Minneapolis Star Tribune
Last update: November 14, 2006 – 10:10 PM

With a Bible in his hand and looking haggard from two nights behind bars, Rep. Mark Olson, R-Big Lake, walked out of the Sherburne County jail Tuesday seeking forgiveness from his wife, the public and God after being charged with two misdemeanor counts of domestic assault after an incident Sunday at his home.

Olson, 51, who was just elected to his eighth term in the Legislature, stopped short of acknowledging guilt for the charges.

"I have failed terribly in my family affairs. I'm grateful for my wife's strength to speak up. First of all I need God's forgiveness and I need my wife's forgiveness and my family's. Then I need the public's forgiveness and all other officials I've done harm to." Olson was released without bail. He was ordered to stay away from his wife and children and from their home.

...If a legislator is found guilty of certain misdemeanors or gross misdemeanors, including assault, he or she could be subject to recall by voters under state law. Additionally, if an ethics complaint is filed and found to be warranted, the House would have broad powers to discipline the offending legislator.

One of the "broad powers" the legislature has is refusing to "seat" the offender. The populace has a "recall" option. I wouldn't have released him without bail - and I hope the "stay away from his wife and children" includes a "go directly to jail, do not pass GO, do not collect $200" clause in it - and a no bail option - if he doesn't obey it. Beating people up is a crime. Our society has called it "discipline" when the victim is a wife or child, but slowly we are getting passed that. Legislators are not protected from jail during legislative session for criminal charges.

Nah, Haggard is an outed closet gay and drug user. He's not a wife and kid abuser. The only connection is the bible-thumping. Unfortunately, there is nothing in the bible that protects women and children from the abuse of their owners. Remember, wives and slaves are supposed to obey their husbands and masters. Said husbands, fathers, and masters are only supposed to treat their subjects well to prevent said subjects from "sinning" by hating the master. Some masters don't give a dam if their subjects go to hell for hating them, they just like to hit people.
