Speakers at the meetings

Has it been brought up about bringing outside speakers in for a meeting? I ask because I know of several speakers that will speak for pretty the plane ticket to get here and back. I had a short email exchange with Hemant Mehta, the author of I sold My Soul on E-Bay, and the owner of The Friendly Atheist blog. It came up that he speaks at freethought groups and all he asks is that his trip be paid for. I told him that I'd bring it up, but I have no say. There are other speakers that will speak for a plane ticket, as well. Brian Dunning and Matt Dillahunty are two others.

You know, it wouldn't even have to be at a meeting. We could host a lecture between meetings. I'm sure we could book a room somewhere. Our apartment complex has a community room that I could book for a $200 deposit. But it'd only hold a few dozen people. I have also thought about hosting potlucks there for another group that Judy and I belong to, but a potluck might be a good idea for freethinkers too.

That does sound like a good idea Robert. And I think it would be best to do it at a meeting. We have the room already, it's cheap, it's large and we're always needing new material for meetings anyway. If we get a semi-big deal person, we can advertise it and get some interest and some new folks. So bring this up at the next meeting.

Sometimes plane tickets are not even that much. My wife just went to Los Angeles for the weekend. $119 total cost.

That is a great idea. I would love to meet Matt Dillahunty, Hemant Mehta, or Brian Dunning. I'd even chip in a little for the plane ticket.
