OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Oklahoma church canceled a controversial gun giveaway for teenagers at a weekend youth conference.
Windsor Hills Baptist had planned to give away a semiautomatic assault rifle until one of the event's organizers was unable to attend.
The church’s youth pastor, Bob Ross, said it’s a way of trying to encourage young people to attend the event. The church expected hundreds of teenagers from as far away as Canada.
...Friday evening, Ross said the gun giveaway had been canceled. Pastor emeritus Jim Vineyard, who ran the event, injured his foot and wouldn’t be able to attend. The gun giveaway was also removed from the church Web site.
Ross said the church would give the gun away next year instead. He said the church spent $800 buying the gun for the promotion.

I don't know why this should suprise anyone. The ultra-religious and assault rifles go together. At least this church admits it and is taking advantage of this well known fact. Even Jesus told his disciples to sell their shirts to buy a sword. (Luke 22:36)

A friend told me he used to go to First Baptist of Springdale (probably 15 years ago or so) but one day they did something over the line for him. For a patriotic 4th of July thing they had guys come into the main auditorium firing M-16's (blanks) into the air. Scared the shit out of him. And hurt his ears.
I should check that story out.

Jesus often gave confusing directions. Here is an example from my book:
While going forth to preach, the disciples were
commanded to take a staff and to wear sandals.
"And he called unto him the twelve, and began to
send them forth by two and two; and gave them power
over unclean spirits; And commanded them that they
should take nothing for their journey, save a staff
only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: But
be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. And
he said unto them. in what place soever ye enter into
an house, there abide till ye depart from that place."
Mark 6:7-10
Revised Standard Version
He charged them to take nothing for their journey
except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their
belts; but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.
Mark 6:8-9
Vs.
While going forth to preach, the disciples were not
to take a staff or to wear shoes.
"And when he had called unto him his twelve
disciples, he gave them power against unclean
spirits,... These twelve Jesus sent forth, and
commanded them, saying,... Provide neither gold, nor
silver, nor brass in your purses, Nor scrip for your
journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet
staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. And
into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire
who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence."
Matt. 10:1, 5, 9-11
Other translations of Matt 10:9-10
Revised Standard Version
"Take no gold, nor silver, now copper in your belts,
no bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals,
nor a staff;..."
New International Version
"Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in
your belts; take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic,
or sandals or a staff;..."
