Great song. I don't get the part about throwing somebodies daughter into the water. Is this just a poetic metaphor, or does it refer to a real event?

In The News - Kris Kristofferson

Read about the sorry way he done somebody's daughter
Chained her to a heavy thing and threw her in the water
And she sank into the darkness with their baby son inside her
A little piece of truth and beauty died

Burning up the atmosphere and cutting down the trees
The billion dollar bombing of a nation on it's knees
Anyone not marching to their tune they call it treason
Everyone says God is on his side

See the lightning, hear the cries
Of the wounded in a world in Holy war
Mortal thunder from the skies
Killing everything they say they're fighting for

Broken babies, broken homes
Broken-hearted people dying everyday
How'd this happen, what went wrong
Don't blame God, I swear to God I heard him say

Chorus
"Not in my name, not on my ground
I want nothing but the ending of the war
No more killing, or it's over
And the mystery won't matter anymore"

Broken dreamers, broken rules
Broken-hearted people just like me and you
We are children of the stars
Don't blame God, I swear to God he's crying too

Repeat Chorus

Repeat First Verse

It refers to Scott Peterson, who was convicted of killing his 8+months pregnant wife Laci and dumping her body in the ocean by binding it to a homemade anchor of cement.

OK. That was ME that said Kristofferson is a god.

I'm still having a helluva time with this. When I DO sign in, it tells me somebody is already signed in under my name. When I DON'T sign in, it logs me in as a guest.

Do guests get free refreshments?

Oh, I thought Bush did it. I guess only Laura Bush of the two has killed someone directly.

Don't worry, Bush has more than enough blood on his hands for the both of them.

There's nothing quite like a spoiled-rotten, fat cat duty evader ordering soldiers to go out and murder foreigners until the soldiers fall victim themselves.

OK, so the 1st verse refers to Scott Peterson. What does Scott Peterson have to do with the rest of the song? Personal killing (murder is usually a family affair) doesn't come anywhere near the hundreds of thousands the unlawful invasion of Iraq has caused (not to mention the rest of the "war on terror").

Commonalities: Both are "In the News", and both lack respect for human life.

I think, by juxtaposing these, Kristofferson is making the point that, just because the killing in Iraq is govt-approved and far away, it is still murder.
