CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. -- An Illinois delegate for Democratic Sen. Barack Obama resigned after using the word "monkeys" to describe black children playing in a tree, the Obama campaign said Tuesday.

Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski, a trustee in the Chicago suburb of Carpentersville, was issued a $75 ticket for disorderly conduct after neighbors complained to police. She says the word wasn't meant racially and she will fight the ticket.

"Given the incident, Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski is stepping down as a delegate and will be replaced," said Obama spokeswoman Amy Brundage.

The incident occurred Saturday, when two children were playing in a tree next door to Ramirez-Sliwinski's house.

She said the parents were outside supervising the children, but she went over and told them to get out of the tree because she was concerned about the boys' safety and because the small magnolia tree was being damaged.

The father of one of the boys told her it was none of her business, she told the Chicago Tribune, and "I calmly said the tree is not there for them to be climbing in there like monkeys."

The mother of one boy called police.

Cmdr. Michael Kilbourne said Tuesday a ti

cket was issued because the ordinance bans conduct that disturbs or alarms people. One of the boys told police he was scared by her comment and a mother said she was disturbed, he said.

Ramirez-Sliwinski does not have a listed telephone number. She did not respond immediately to an e-mail.

Ramirez-Sliwinski says she doesn't plan to run for another term on the village board. "In the eyes of the public, this is wrong," she told the Arlington Heights Daily Herald.

Free speech is fine, cops are dumb. You can still call people monkeys. If she contests the ticket, and she should, she will prevail.

However, do be careful not to say anything bad about the Vice President or his actions. That can get you arrested.

What ever happened to free speech?

Arrest over Cheney barb triggers lawsuit

Charlie Brennan, Rocky Mountain News
Tuesday, October 3, 2006

A Denver-area man filed a lawsuit today against a member of the Secret Service for causing him to be arrested after he approached Vice President Dick Cheney in Beaver Creek this summer and criticized him for his policies concerning Iraq.

Attorney David Lane said that on June 16, Steve Howards was walking his 7-year-old son to a piano practice, when he saw Cheney surrounded by a group of people in an outdoor mall area, shaking hands and posing for pictures with several people.

According to the lawsuit filed at U.S. District Court in Denver, Howards and his son walked to about two-to-three feet from where Cheney was standing, and said to the vice president, "I think your policies in Iraq are reprehensible," or words to that effect, then walked on.

Ten minutes later, according to Howards' lawsuit, he and his son were walking back through the same area, when they were approached by Secret Service agent Virgil D. "Gus" Reichle Jr., who asked Howards if he had "assaulted" the vice president. Howards denied doing so, but was nonetheless placed in handcuffs and taken to the Eagle County Jail.

The lawsuit states that the Secret Service agent instructed that Howards should be issued a summons for harassment, but that on July 6 the Eagle County District Attorney's Office dismissed all charges against Howards.

The lawsuit filed today alleges that Howards was arrested in retaliation for having exercised his First Amendment right of free speech, and that his arrest violated his Fourth Amendment protection against unlawful seizure.

Rush Limbaugh is all over this "monkeys" story. And the one about Obama's people at Carnegie Mellon rearranging a crowd so that not so many black people are visible and so that more white and asian people in the front.

and....?

Since we are all descended from apes and originated in Africa, I don't see what the problem is...

I like monkeys!

According to the quote, she really didn't call the kids monkeys. She said that they were "climbing in there like monkeys." To me there is a difference in saying someone is a monkey and someone is acting like a monkey. Besides, why are people so thin skinned that a stupid comment could cause such insult? I've had to learn not to be thin skinned since my deconversion. I've been called worse things. Everyone has the freedom to say anything. Her comment was stupid, but she shouldn't have been ticketed for that. I bet she was being an a-hole about the kids climbing in the tree. If we passed laws that make it illegal to be an a-hole, I would get arrested all the time.
