Samuel Brownback (R-KS) has drafted a resolution to declare a “10 commandments weekend”.

As is noted at this link:

"This bill is in the first step in the legislative process. Introduced bills go first to committees that deliberate, investigate, and revise them before they go to general debate. The majority of bills never make it out of committee. Keep in mind that sometimes the text of one bill is incorporated into another bill, and in those cases the original bill, as it would appear here, would seem to be abandoned."

Phil had this observation:

This is a clear violation of the first amendment.

However, I want to focus on the story from the bible.

1) Moses is told verbally of 10 rules. (no tablets) (Exodus 20)

2) Moses gets 42 laws that are put on tablets. (not commandments) (Exodus 21-31)

3) After 40 days the people make an idol out of gold. (Exodus 32: 1-14)

4) 42 laws are inscribed on both sides of tablets. (Exodus 32:15)

5) Moses smashes tablets. He also turns the idol into a powder and makes all the people drink it. (Exodus 32:19)

6) Moses instructs his followers to use their swords and kill fathers and brothers and neighbors – 3000 die (Exodus 32:25-29)

7) Moses gets a second and different set of 10 rules (Exodus 34:1)

8) The 10th commandment is “thou shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.” (Exodus 34:26)

9) These 10 rules are only now called commandments (Exodus 34:28)

Before you declare that the US law is based on the 10 commandments, actually read the bible. There is also [a] third version of these 10 rules listed in Deuteronomy Chapter 5.
