Barbara Walters received a Christmas card from the White House.

=================
She said it was he most religious White House Christmas card in her memory. The card included explicit religious references beyond just a bible verse...:
You alone are the LORD.
You made the heavens, even the highest heavens,
and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it,
the seas and all that is in them.
You give life to everything,
and the multitudes of heaven worship you.
NEHEMIAH 9:6 (NIV)
But whereas in previous years the President and the First Lady opted for messages of happiness, goodwill, and peace, this year featured the following closer:
May the joy of all creation fill your heart this blessed season 2007.

Go here to see a picture of it.

On the one hand, Christmas *is* a Christian holiday and if that's what he wants to send out, that's okay with me, whatever. But the hypocrisy of it is rather jarring.

The Christmas SEASON, and ultimately Christmas itself, takes place because of religions that existed long before Christianity.

Absolutely there are a multitude of religious holy days surrounding the solstice and have been for as long as people have noticed the solstice. It's OK for christians to wish people, "Merry Christmas" as long as they don't go ballistic when someone of another faith responds with wishes of happiness or whatever on their other than christian holy day - and when aetheists bid them joy of the season (if not the solstice, which can get into another theism, since it IS the holy day of the multitude of nature religions out there).

So true. Here's a fairly good resource site that examines holidays and Sun god celebrations around the Solstice:

enjoy.
