US Ignorance of Evolution Gets Worse

Evolution fares poorly in Newsweek poll
By: Steve

The latest Newsweek poll included a variety of interesting questions about Americans and religious matters, including the not-surprising fact that 91% of the public say they believe in God and almost as many (87 percent) say they identify with a specific religion. But perhaps more importantly, Newsweek also asked poll respondents about modern biology.

Nearly half (48 percent) of the public rejects the scientific theory of evolution; one-third (34 percent) of college graduates say they accept the Biblical account of creation as fact. Seventy-three percent of Evangelical Protestants say they believe that God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years; 39 percent of non-Evangelical Protestants and 41 percent of Catholics agree with that view.

These poll results come just a few months after an international study was conducted to measure which countries were the most accepting on evolutionary biology. Of the 34 countries involved, the United States ranked 33rd. Only Turkey ranked lower.

A comparison of peoples' views in 34 countries finds that the United States ranks near the bottom when it comes to public acceptance of evolution. Only Turkey ranked lower.

Among the factors contributing to America's low score are poor understanding of biology, especially genetics, the politicization of science and the literal interpretation of the Bible by a small but vocal group of American Christians, the researchers say.

“American Protestantism is more fundamentalist than anybody except perhaps the Islamic fundamentalist, which is why Turkey and we are so close,” said study co-author Jon Miller of Michigan State University.
Evolving Issue

The researchers combined data from public surveys on evolution collected from 32 European countries, the United States and Japan between 1985 and 2005. Adults in each country were asked whether they thought the statement “Human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals,” was true, false, or if they were unsure.

The study found that over the past 20 years:

* The percentage of U.S. adults who accept evolution declined from 45 to 40 percent.

It's not just knowledge of biology in which Christian fundamentalism is so close to Islamic fundamentalism. The "fundamental correctness" of killing or suppressing anybody who believes differently from you is right up there seems to be the prime directive of both groups.

Also, both forms of fundamentalism support theocracy. They both believe that religious faith should be imposed by State.

I'm going to nip this in the bud right now: this thread will not become a discussion about theocracy or state imposition. Keep the topic on religious identification and its ties to acceptance of scientific viewpoints.

I just finished viewing that utterly stunning description of life. Take 4 billions years, some energy, some basic amino acids, throw in a protein, shake well and you end up with, well, with peanut butter. Or, the people that made it anyway. And the circle of life is complete.
