PGP - Pretty Good Privacy

Many people concerned with freedom of communication and privacy use strong cryptography, at least occasionally, to secure email. It can also be used to verify identity and sign documents.

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is the international standard for strong "public key" crypto. For this type of crypto system, one generates two keys - a public key and a private key. The public key encrypts the email; the private key decrypts it. One simply publishes one's public key for everyone to see, avoiding the key distribution problems of old-timey symmetric ciphers.
