Lent is almost over and we have missed a great opportunity to help end abortion:) Few of you may be aware, but I am a pro-lifer. I am also a pro-choicer. I do believe that abortion has several unfortunate negative impacts on the individuals who choose them and society at large. It is often, I think, the lesser of two evils, however there really are FAR to many abortions occurring in this country. If I am not very much mistaken, the mass majority of them were not medically necessary, but rather the result of an unwanted pregnancy. So you see, abortion is not the problem, it is the symptom. I would never want to take away a woman's right to choose (the pro-choice part of me) however I am certain that no one actually WANTS to have an abortion--they would much rather have not gotten pregnant in the first place. If I am right about this, then the majority of abortions could be avoided through education and free proliferation of birth control. Planned parenthood seems to understand this. They are leading the way in the fight to minimize the occurrences of abortion (a much more realistic goal). However few are aware of the services they provide.
At any rate I would like to know if any of you would like to join me in an attempt to reduce the number of abortions in fayetteville area. I have started by sending the following letter to the 40 Days for Life people:) Lets see how they respond. I am not hopeful that they will be very receptive. This is their web-sight: http://www.40daysforlife.com/fayetteville/

Subject: Suggestions
Would your group be willing to start/advertise a drive to provide exams/birth control at a reduce price (free would be nice) to the community? This would go a long way toward reducing abortion. I think you will find it far more effective than gathering across the street from a medical center with signs devoid of any useful information. For this reason I would also like to suggest an education campaign. For example, planned parenthood already provides the services mentioned above to many who would qualify however, more often than not, people are unaware of these resources. If this has already been suggested or is currently underway I would like to offer my assistance and input.
Thanks!
Kevin
