it sounds like I've made the newspapers

Post by Randall Doc Fleck »

I just received a call from the editorial page editor of the Arkansas Democratic-Gazette newspaper. Apparently they've decided to print my letter.

"In God We Trust"

Shame on our US congressmen.

Recently, our US house of representatives passed a bill, 410 to 8, recognizing the phrase "In God We Trust" as a national motto and providing that it should be engraved in stone on the walls of the new multimillion dollar National Visitors Center in Washington, DC. What a sham! Clearly there is blatant disregard among our representatives for the oath each took to protect and defend the constitution.

Around the nation, use of the phrase "In God We Trust" has been spreading like a virus to show up on all sorts of government paid items... including monuments and even licenses. For the sake of our basic liberty and the preservation of the nation, this unpatriotic god-above-nation pandering must stop. "Congress shall make no law establishing religion..." Trust common sense.

Thats all well and good, and I agree with the sentiment of the letter. However, "In God We Trust" has been the national motto since July 30th, 1956 (P.L. 84-140). Its been the state motto of Florida since 2006.

Your right it has, and it’s the dumbest law our government has ever passed. The point is “In God We Trust” doesn’t support a secular government and makes our government look bad. I wish this statement was demolished and can’t wait until the day that it finally is.

And, of course, it's false. At least for millions of secular Americans.

.

Once again proving a very old adage:

For the foolish religion is true,
For the wise, false and,
For the politician, useful.
