Orlando 'Tea Party' rally draws more than 4,000
By Helen Eckinger | Sentinel Staff Writer
March 22, 2009
Singer Lloyd Marcus told the crowd assembled in Lake Eola Park on Saturday that he was going to give them his take on the first days of the Obama administration.
Then he shrieked.
That pretty much summed up the mood in the park Saturday afternoon, when more than 4,000 people attended the Orlando Tea Party, a conservative rally aimed at expressing discontent with Washington.
"This is maybe the greatest single gathering of God-fearing patriots in the history of Orlando, Florida," local conservative radio host Bud Hedinger, who emceed the event, told the crowd.
The attendees, many of whom said they'd heard about the rally on Hedinger's radio show, brandished flags and homemade signs bearing slogans such as "Repeal the pork or our bacon is cooked" and "Obama lied, liberty died."
"We're really scared about what's happening in our country," said Debby Whisenand, 71, of Largo in Pinellas County. She waved a sign that read "The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money" on one side, and "You can't blame Bush anymore" on the other.
Her feelings were shared by Lisa Feroli, one of the event's organizers, who said that a similar fear motivated her to e-mail Hedinger with the idea for the Orlando Tea Party.
"The goal was to get people united, to let people know that they aren't alone in their feelings on despair," Feroli said. "We want to speak out against the push toward socialization that we feel is taking place in our country."
Several speakers addressed the crowd, estimated by Orlando police and event organizers at 4,200, on a variety of topics, including gun rights, freedom of speech, the dangers of communism and, most prevalently, the economy, especially the Obama administration's bailout plan.
"We have had enough of massive government-driven bailout using our money," Hedinger said, prompting the crowd to start chanting "U.S.A." over and over.
The country's economic woes weighed heavily on attendees, such as Ed Squire, 52, of Winter Springs. Holding a sign that read "Obama — he's robbin U.S. not Robin Hood," he said that he was worried about the current rate of government spending.
"There's absolutely no way as a nation that we can sustain that kind of spending," Squire said.
Several members of the crowd said they'd recently been laid off, including Ross Iannarelli, 66, of Port Orange, who said he'd just lost his job at an electrical-equipment company.
"They need to shove that bum out," he said, referring to President Obama. "I hate seeing them spend my grandchildren's money."
Glenn Austin, 52, and his wife, Frankie, 43, of Oviedo, also said they were anxious about the economy. They chose to express their worries, however, in a rather novel way: They wrapped banners calling for the end of the Federal Reserve around the tiny waists of their Chihuahua, Pepper, and miniature pinscher-Chihuahua mix, Peanut.
"Everything's gone to the dogs," Frankie Austin said.

Okay, show where "Obama lied."
You can't do it. Does this suggest that you are the one lying? Yes it does, and that's a little bit ironic isn't it?
Oh, and I'll see your 4,200 and raise ya. Here's what it looks like when Obama has a party:

Glen Beck is trying to start little anti-Obama meetings. I think they had one in Fayetteville. He calls them "We Surround You." It's not true of course but it makes wing-nuts feel better. You should go Galt. Maybe you would find it soothing.

As Bill Maher stated the most recent "Real Time," Beck is off the charts now with his lunacy. He's talking about FEMA concentration camps and totalitarianism. (Funny, when Bush was expanding the powers of the president, Beck LOVED it...)
It's like the anti-UN bunch of nonsense that Darrel and I roasted a few years ago here in Fayetteville. Concentration camps, FEMA as a secret police--the full delusion.
Let us know when there's a Beck meeting around here. We'll go set them straight.

Yeah we should. And it would be real easy to "set them straight" as you say. We are talking Frank Whalen silly here. The dumbest of the dumb. Check out one of their websites:
http://wesurroundthem.us/
You can even take their "yes/no" test to see if you are one of the ones doing the surrounding (rather than the other way around).
I laughed out loud and scared the wife when I read question #1. Excerpt:
***
We Surround Them
As Americans, we are more similar than we are different. These simple questions were asked by talk show radio host Glenn Beck to demonstrate that the majority of Americans share similar beliefs. He has asked anybody who agrees with at least 7 of these 9 items to email him an individual photo of yourself to wesurroundthem@foxnews.com. He is planning on doing something with them on his television show (likely on March 13th) to demonstrate that you are not alone and remind our elected officials that they work for us.
You can do that using the form below. This site also aims to have some images and tools that you post on your own blog or website to help spread the word.

A majority of Americans believe "global warming is real."
See here. That sets the U.S. public apart from the global-warming skeptics who assembled this week in New York City to try to debunk the science behind climate change. At the same time, with only 34% of Americans saying they worry "a great deal" about the problem, most Americans do not view the issue in the same dire terms as the many prominent leaders advancing global warming as an issue.
Since Glenn Beck is a global warming denier, he must be cautious about what he sees as indicated by a majority of "similar beliefs."
And since he got canned at CNN and bumped to FAUX NEWS, it looks like not many people share his nonsensical, alarminst beliefs about much else.

Glen Beck "must be cautious?" This is a person who says he can't disprove the "FEMA concentration camps." Have you seen his show? It's farce. It's for children in adult bodies. He is getting good ratings over at FOX but surely it is due to the "car accident effect." People dropping in to look at the nutcase.

Good. I asked Galt to present an example of Obama lying and instead of running he has accepted the challenge. Let's see how it goes.
No, actually I don't remember Obama saying "there would be no earmarks in his administration."
Please demonstrate the truth of your claim by showing, with citation, where he made this claim.
Three points.
1) You haven't demonstrated this but I am looking forward to you making the attempt so I can again make an example out of you.
2) Like a child in elementary school you refer to Obama as "zero." Perhaps you think that saying this has the same effect in an adult forum as it did when you were in grade school. Actually, no. Some day you might learn that this actually tells people something about you and precisely nothing about Obama.
3) Let me remind you that a few months ago we had a contest where Mr. Obama went up against your best and brightest republican. And he beat him like a drum. He beat him so bad he could have spotted him California and New York and he still would have beat him. Point being:
If Obama is a "zero," yet he wipes the floor with your top dog, what does that make your guy?
But enough with the name calling, let's see you make your case that Obama has lied. Off you go now. The truth is in the details. If your record on this forum shows anything it is that there are two things you are not good at and that is: the truth, and the details.

Re: Anti-Obama Tea Party Draws 4,200!!

Oh, just a wee bit on the republican fake concern about earmarks. Let's not forget the "socialist" red state pork welfare program they feast on:
"Eight of the top 10 beneficiaries of federal largesse voted for John McCain for President. Unsurprisingly, all 10 states at the bottom of the list - those whose outflow of tax revenue is funding programs elsewhere in the country - all voted for Barack Obama in 2008." Link
And leading the nation in earmarks received per capita? "Sarah Palin's Alaska. (Alaskans got almost $210 per person in earmarks, while Californians got $16 and New Yorkers $13 in comparison.)"
You betcha. <wink>
Now I got to thinking that perhaps Galt is having trouble backing up his claim about Obama supposedly having lied. The task of investigating claims is not something that comes naturally to him. So before I go for a swim, let me help him out. What follows is every reference to earmarks made by Obama during the three debates:
First debate ("earmark" appears 7 times):
"Well, Senator McCain is absolutely right that the earmarks process has been abused, which is why I suspended any requests for my home state, whether it was for senior centers or what have you, until we cleaned it up.
But let's be clear: Earmarks account for $18 billion in last year's budget. Senator McCain is proposing -- and this is a fundamental difference between us -- $300 billion in tax cuts to some of the wealthiest corporations and individuals in the country, $300 billion. Now, $18 billion is important; $300 billion is really important."
"But let's go back to the original point. John, nobody is denying that $18 billion is important. And, absolutely, we need earmark reform. And when I'm president, I will go line by line to make sure that we are not spending money unwisely.
But the fact is that eliminating earmarks alone is not a recipe for how we're going to get the middle class back on track."
CNN Debate Transcrip
Second debate ("earmark" appears 8 times):
"Sen. McCain likes to talk about earmarks a lot. And that's important. I want to go line by line through every item in the federal budget and eliminate programs that don't work and make sure that those that do work, work better and cheaper."
"I mean, Sen. McCain has been talking tough about earmarks, and that's good, but earmarks account for about $18 billion of our budget."
CNN debate transcript
Third debate ("earmark" appears 5 times):
"Now, Senator McCain talks a lot about earmarks. That's one of the centerpieces of his campaign.
Earmarks account for 0.5 percent of the total federal budget. There's no doubt that the system needs reform and there are a lot of screwy things that we end up spending money on, and they need to be eliminated. But it's not going to solve the problem."
LA Times complete and final transcript
DAR
Incidentally, McCain is a bit of a one trick pony with his earmark concern, and it didn't really catch on, but I read something interesting the other day about his ability to be a senator from Arizona who doesn't do earmarks. He has an arrangement with the other republican senator from Arizona. He does the earmarks. That's a neat trick they have. Probably fools a lot of Galts.
So Galt, I've done your work for you. Show where Obama said: "there would be no earmarks in his administration." Or, you could admit you were wrong, or lied.

Of course he lied. He's a conservative.
Rachel Maddow and others on TV have already pointed out numerous times how it was McCain who said he'd eliminate earmarks, not Obama. Obama just promised "reform" of the earmark system. I don't know if he has reformed the system or not, but having only 2% of the recent spending bill be earmarks is surely not a clear case of breaking a promise, since that promise was rather vague. Instead of making up a position and attributing it to Obama to try to show that he lied, why doesn't Galt knuckle down and show us that 2% worth of earmarks is clearly not "reform"?
In other words, why doesn't he try to show that Obama really did lie instead of lying himself to try to show this?
Oh, and notice that the GOP once again projects their view (a promise to eliminate earmarks) onto Obama.

It's pretty stupid on the part of Beck and other loonies to try to get large crowds at "Anti-Obama" events, as if to show that Obama is unpopular, when anyone with a computer and Internet hook-up can look at the latest polls and see that Obama is very popular.
From March 16, 2009:
See here.Obama's job approval rating stands at 64 percent in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Monday. That rating is down 3 percentage points from mid-February.
When asked about the economy, 59 percent of respondents approve of how Obama's performing, with 40 percent disapproving.
"Most of the Americans who disapprove of Obama are Republicans," said Keating Holland, CNN's polling director. "His approval rating is 59 percent among independents and over 90 percent among Democrats, but two-thirds of Republicans have a negative view of his actions in office so far."
...Two out of three approve of how the president is helping the middle class, 64 percent give Obama a thumbs up on unemployment, 62 percent approve of how he's handling taxes, and 54 percent support him on the home foreclosure crisis.
The poll indicates that the vast majority of Americans, 86 percent, hope that Obama's policies will succeed, with 11 percent rooting for his policies to fail..."One in four Republicans wants Obama's policies to fail," Holland said.
Of course, don't forget how stupid the average American is:
One in 10 Americans still think Obama is Muslim: poll
April 2, 2009
See here.WASHINGTON - More than two months after Barack Obama placed his hand on the Bible and was sworn in as president of the United States, 11 per cent of Americans still think he is a Muslim, a poll suggested on Thursday.
White evangelical Protestants and Republicans were the most likely to say Obama — who has an Arabic middle name — was Muslim in response to the poll question: "Do you happen to know what Barack Obama's religion is?"
Nearly one in five white evangelical Protestants and 17 per cent of the Republicans who took part in the telephone poll of 1,308 adults, which was conducted by Pew Research from March 9-12, said they thought Obama was Muslim.
Fewer than half in each group — 38 per cent of white evangelicals and 46 per cent of Republicans — correctly identified him as Christian.
Even among Democrats, only 55 per cent correctly identified Obama as a Christian; seven per cent thought he was Muslim.
Poll respondents with a university degree scored highest — 68 per cent — in correctly identifying the Democratic president's religious affiliation as Christian.

Re: Anti-Obama Tea Party Draws 4,200!!
From Media Matters: Fox spent weeks promoting apparent tea party scam--
TPM Media's Zachary Roth reported earlier in the week that the political action committee that organized the Tea Party Express -- Our Country Deserves Better PAC -- funneled almost two-thirds of its spending from July to November back to the political consulting firm from which it was spawned, Russo, Marsh, and Associates. More than $850,000 of the money the supposedly grassroots PAC collected went to the firm of GOP political operatives who ran it.
Fox News heavily promoted the Tea Party Express; the Our Country Deserves Better PAC even used Fox's promotion in a fundraising email. Then Fox's Griff Jenkins hit the trail with the Express, following that bus around the country, throwing journalistic integrity aside as he declared its riders "the America that Washington forgot."
But somehow, Jenkins missed out on the real story: how loyal tea-party-goers were separated from their hard-earned cash, which was funneled to fat cat Republican political consultants. Russo, Marsh, and Associates salutes you, Fox News. They could have scammed the tea partiers without you, but it probably wouldn't have been nearly as lucrative.
