BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (AP) -- A Los Fresnos family is going to court to prevent a Cameron County justice of the peace from ordering spankings in his courtroom.

A lawsuit filed today alleges Justice of the Peace Gustavo "Gus" Garza told a 14-year-old girl's stepfather to strike her repeatedly on the buttocks in open court.

If he didn't, the judge said the girl would be found guilty and fined $500 for truancy.

...In an affidavit, Zurita says that when he was through, the judge told him he had not struck the girl hard enough.

My first thought...

Don't we have dozen of studies that show that corporal punishment does absolutely nothing to change the child's long term behavior, and can even have long term effects??

Yeah, that's the TX I left, too. Every few years a Judge does that and it gets into the papers. It's supposed to somehow prove that us liberals are raising criminals because we don't approve of corporal punishment and that if we'd just used "the rod" instead of "spoiling the child" there wouldn't be any juvenile delinquents. Actually, societies without JDs don't use corporal punishment, according to anthopoligical studies I read many years ago (no I don't still have them to cite) - but then, they also don't have/didn't have contact with us "civilized" types.
